Over the past decade I have visited Poatina, Tasmania most years, sometimes twice a year. I keep coming back as the people and the landscape have made such a significant impact on my life. Most visits have been in January and the time out from ordinary life has given me the space to contemplate what my new year might look like. I process life through making art, so spending a week making art amongst fellow creatives is pure bliss. Many artistic and personal breakthroughs have their origins in my time in Poatina.
Rather than trying to capture a specific scene from my walks I am capturing the feeling of walking through nature, being immersed in it. The wind as it rustles the leaves, the sun as it warms my face, the fog which creates a sense of mystery.
I have used printing, collage and various painting and drawing techniques, layer upon layer to create the paintings. I do not have a plan when I begin a painting – it is like a different version of walking through nature; I decide which path to take as I go along depending on what discoveries I make along the way.
I hope you enjoy strolling through the landscape with me, Tania
